This sampling procedure, done on an outpatient basis, which removes five to ten small pieces of tissue from the abnormality, takes about 45 minutes using only local anesthesia and a tiny skin nick. This procedure offers minimal discomfort, little bruising, no stitches and no disfigurement. If the diagnosis is not cancer, a surgical biopsy may still be necessary. If cancer is found, a complete removal of the abnormal area may be required.
