Billing and Insurance

Billing can be complicated and confusing. Below we break down how to navigate the costs and better understand your medical bill.

Understanding Your Bill

If you receive services at a hospital or any affiliated hospital facility, you will receive a bill for both “professional fees” and “facility fees”.

The facility fees are charged by the hospital.

The professional fees cover our Radiologists’ time to conduct, read and interpret your study, as well as to draft and share a report for your Physician to determine your best treatment plan.

Your professional services bill will be sent directly from Charleston Radiologists, PA. We value our patients and welcome any billing questions.

How much will my diagnostic services cost?

  • How much you will pay for an imaging study depends on several factors, including the type of imaging exam you are undergoing, where your imaging is performed, whether you have health insurance, the type of insurance and the insurance plan’s requirements. Ask your hospital provider for a quote for both their fee AND the professional fee.

  • The amount charged to you, the patient, for an imaging exam depends on your insurance company and coverage. You may be charged a fixed fee, negotiated by the company and provider, or your insurance plan may require you to pay a percentage of charges over and above your premium, co-pay, and any deductible.

  • It is best to contact your insurance provider to understand how your charges will be determined.

  • If you do not have insurance, discuss uninsured fees with the hospital facility where you will be having your imaging done. Ask them to include the professional fees and the facility fees.

Why did I receive a separate bill from the medical imaging provider?

  • Medical imaging providers, such as Charleston Radiologists, PA, are hired to perform imaging studies in a hospital and for hospital-affiliated facilities. They are not employed by the hospital and therefore have their own billing for services.

  • Therefore, the hospital will send a facility bill and the radiologists will send a bill for their service.

  • The service they provide includes: Sub-specialty trained radiologists time and expertise to plan and interpret the studies to determine a diagnosis and guide your treatment plan; prepare a permanent written report; and share the study results with your referring physician/provider.
