Treat Osteoporosis Related Spinal Fractures With Image Guided Kyphoplasty

Every year, 1.5 million fragility fractures occur in the U.S. Vertebral compression fractures, (VCFs) account for almost half of this number, making osteoporosis a major health concern. Although fragility fractures can have a disastrous effect on the quality of life, in terms of treatment options, the outlook for fracture management is bright.

Balloon Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that can reduce back pain, as well as attempt to restore vertebral body height and spinal alignment.

Spinal fractures can cause spinal deformity, back pain, and loss of height. Multiple VCFs often have serious medical consequences, and managing these fractures exerts a toll on patients, healthcare providers, and society. This progressive deterioration of health is referred to as “the downward spiral.”

Image-guided Kyphoplasty is performed by an interventional radiologist. During kyphoplasty, a balloon is first inserted into the fractured bone through the hollow needle to create a cavity or space. The cement is injected into the cavity once the balloon is removed. Depending on your provider's recommendation, a similar procedure called Vertebroplasty may be chosen. During Vertebroplasty, the Interventional physician uses image guidance, typically fluoroscopy, to inject a cement mixture into the fractured bone through a hollow needle. Charleston Radiologists’ Interventional physicians have excellent outcomes and high volume experience performing minimally invasive Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty. Procedures can be scheduled at Trident Medical Center, Summerville Medical Center, Colleton Medical Center, or Moncks Corner Medical Center.
